Introduction:

This is a nice helper module which has no equivalent in the original System 55 Modular concept, but is very useful as system output interface. I had built this type of module for my Formant Modular and had made good experiences with it.

It provides two stereo line outputs and two stereo headphone outputs, so you can work with the modular without an external mixer, a PA equipment or something similar. Just plug in an amplifier or headphones and have fun.
As it has own mixing capabilities, you can additionally plug in other synthesizers or organs, mono or stereo, as the module provides four input channel pairs, where the upper input channel row is mixed to one stereo side, and the lower input channel row to the other stereo side.

I used input jacks with contact switch and connected the upper input jacks to the lower to obtain a "default" usage of both stereo channels when a mono source is connected to the upper jack and no source is connected to the lower jack.

The circuit is just a simple signal mixer circuit. One can find millions of them in the web. The module provides eight ac coupled mono input channels with input level pots. They are mixed by two NE5532 audio opamps to provide two stereo line outputs. These outputs are buffered by another two NE5532 to provide two stereo headphone stages. The outputs are also armed with stereo volume pots.

The mixer part is grouped in two blocks à four inputs for the two stereo channels.

Frontend:

The front panel consists of three blocks, from right to the left:

TOUT Board

  • Board dimensions: 150 x 70 mm
  • I developed the board as KiCad project. I used the KiCad schema editor, the KiCad simulator and the KiCad PCB editor, all from one circuit definition to ensure a consistent development.
  • The 4-layer board was produced by the Hongkong JLCPCB company.
